You might have deduced by our brand name that elephant poo paper is in fact ECO-friendly. Obviously it is made out of recycled material, aka the poo… But do you know what makes elephant poo paper sustainable? We definitely wanted to know more so we dove into it and found out some pretty interesting sh*t!
Save ALL the water
Do you know how paper is made? It is basically pressed out of pulp that is created with a mix of fibers (usually from trees) and clean water. Now we all know that clean water is almost invaluable and we need to be careful with how we use it. The great news is that elephant poo paper uses 35% less water in the creation process than regular paper.

With 10 kilos of poo you can make 120 sheets of paper
Repurpose ALL the things
Elephant poo paper is made out of poo, yes of course. But did you know only about 30% of the fibers in the pulp comes from elephant poo? The rest is post consumer waste from all over Sri Lanka, from bark to newspaper and ricepaper. It’s all used to mix into the pulp and create our beautiful products. Fun fact: 10 kilos of elephant poo make 120 sheets of paper on average. So much repurposing!!
No tree chopping here
Regular paper is generally made from trees. If you look around and see how many pieces of paper a regular school or office uses you can imagine we cut down quit some trees. In the Netherlands alone we use around 80 kilos of paper, per person, per year. Only about 6% of that paper is sustainably sourced. On top of that the demand for paper is becoming higher now that more companies are switching from plastic to paper packaging. Though wood is a material that can be reused over and over again around 15 billion trees are still being cut down every year to make new products. By using paper made from recycled material, we save up to 20 trees per 1000 kilos of paper.
Let’s make a rainbow
Our supplier is now able to create elephant poo paper in up to 36 different colors. They use only natural colorings for this process, so no harm done here!

No crazy machines here! Everything is handmade.
Breathe, it’s clean!
Mass production, huge machines for chopping and creating… You can imagine the paper industry does some damage to our atmosphere. Because of the way recycled paper is made, it contaminates the atmosphere 70% less than the production of regular paper does.
Fairtrade and handmade baby
Because our products are also handmade, you can imagine they need a lot less crazy machines and like I said there is no mass production happening. Because of this for the creation of elephant poo paper 64% less energy is needed than with regular paper.
We hope this inspires you to start using more eco-friendly alternatives to regular paper. Want to see what we have to offer? Check out our elephant poo paper in the shop!
